Help with large tank design

I work at a high school that has a very large built in tank. (I can't remember how many gallons, but it is 10 ft long x 2 ft wide) We are stocking it as a freshwater tank, but would like to have a land area as well. After months of planning and discarding ideas I think we have decided on an island in the middle of the tank. Any ideas how we can achieve this while maintaining the natural look? We have decided on acrylic rods or tubed to support the land area. But are unsure of what to use for the actual "land" that will also prevent things from slipping or getting pushed off. We will have fairly large land area because of the size of the tank, so naturally we would want to be as diverse as possible. Any suggestions?

There's some nifty information on creating a "river" type tank with land and water and different types of fish and stuff around here somewhere. You should be able to find it through the search function.

There's also this post, which has pictures, about constructing an acrylic island/platform thing. This is just neat, I think.
