Our axolotl Axel has been hurt by the new axolotl who is much smaller then him!!

Last morning I saw that axel has been hurt so I separated the two, I put the other one in another tank. After a while I noticed that Axel has'nt moved his back legs for a while. They point upwards like when his pooing.I didn't think it was any strange then...but this morning his legs are still pointing upwards and he doesnt move his back legs at all.And the tip of his tail is badly chewed on by the other axie.He looks terrible. And I saw that he's back is not in it's normal form..Can it be broken???Is there something I can do?If his back or leg is broken can the axolotl repair it by himself??should I put him in a salt bath and have him in the fridge!!I feel so sorry for him,I should have separated them sooner, but I thought that they had been "friends"now because Ricard haven't snapped at Axel for a few days..I was so wrong...If you want I can take some photos of Axel and his wounds!!

Here are some pictures of Axel,it's not good quality but I hope you can see anyway.

Marianne - It is good you separated them. Axel looks like he is pretty chewed up.

You will need to keep an eye on his injuries to make sure fungus doesn't start to grow.

Since he appears to be in a tank with no live plants you could add aquarium salt directly to his tank at 1 rounded tablespoon per 5 gallons (18.9 L), and keep him in a light salt solution.

From Doc Fishwell's Aquarium Salt:
**Aquarium salt does not evaporate, is not filtered out, and can be added as directed with a water change.

You may want to put him in the fridge for a week. You probably know the drill but just incase; Keep him in a food safe container with lid (like an ice cream bucket), keep the water clean and offer him food daily when you check on him. Keep extra water in the fridge to change his water with so it is the same temperature.

As far as his legs being broken, I am unaware of anything you can do but give him time to heal. Broken legs can heal "oddly" or he could be back to normal in a few weeks/months.

i feel so sorry for axel. He looks really bad. I hope he gets better!

I must inform you all that Axel is feeling fine now. After the attack we separated the two and after tree days in his cave he came out. And was extremely well. And his back legs were not broken or his back.he didn't need the fridge or the salt baths. He was very lucky!!No fungus either.

He's definetly a survivor!

Thats very good to hear Marianne. I was reading through this, bitting my nails the whole way through.

I sick axie is alot more stressful than what it reads/or sounds like.
So im very happy for you

Thank goodness he is okay, I know people that have had similar things happen, and it turned out much worse. Yes, he is deffinitly a "survivor"

I was wondering, when one needs to put their axy in the fridge, in a container, and put a lid on so the axo won't jump out.But will there be enough oxygen in a closed small container like that?

Sherri, Cold water has a higher oxygen level than warmer waters. As long as water changes follow, the axolotl will be fine in the small container. Just make sure the fresh water is also the same temp as the water the axolotl is in inside the fridge. Just keep an extra container of water in the fridge. This is what I do.
