I just had a look at the schedule for presentations at next month's annual meeting of the Herpetological Society of Japan (Nov. 12-13 in Sendai), and I found some pertaining to C. pyrrhogaster.
The one I'm particularly interested in is an oral presentation by Terusuke Hayashi, which some of you know of-so-well as the author or co-author of some core studies on C. pyrrhogaster. It's titled
On the Stability of and Changes in Ventral Patterns of Cynops pyrrhogaster Over the Long Term
(my translation from Japanese -- for better or for worse!).
There will also be a oral presentation by Kyoto University's Koji Mochida with the intriguing title:
Newts that Show their Bellies and Newts that Don't: Geographical Differentiation in Warning Colors and Defensive Behavior
(again, my translation -- or mistranslation?
)
Also, there will be a poster presentation by Kumi Matsui and some others on:
Carotenoid Coloration in Newts
...by which I assume they mean C. pyrrhogaster.
Mochida and Matsui are the same people who along with Masahisa Nakamura brought us this gem:
Food Habit of the Juvenile of the Japanese Newt Cynops pyrrhogaster
(Zoological Science Vol. 20, No. 7 -- 2003).
That report is, again, available in full here:
http://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/zsj/20/7/855/_pdf
I'm told by a prospective participant that there will be at least three other findings (his!) concerning this species at the conference, but unfortunately I probably won't be able to make it this year...
