Hey everyone,

I'm elated at the moment, so just wanted to share a quick herping discovery from this evening. I'm a Californian who's been living in Ireland for six weeks (for my work), and have been herping several times per week with no luck of the Irish.

FINALLY, after some careful planning and a bit of research, I set out on a herping mission this evening. After about an hour of zippo, I turned over a large piece of cement rock laying in a field, and I found FOUR smooth newts underneath it! It was amazing, and something I will never forget. It was almost unreal--all those hours of searching finally paying off.

Anyhow, just wanted to share.

Sam

Erin go bragh!

Glad to see you finally got some herps there. I have yet to visit, but have tons of family in County Cork. Get some pictures!

Hi
If You are in right place (nearby mating pond) You can find lots of this species under metal grid doormat:

Greetings.

Well done Sam. Please take a photo next time! I always find it challenging to come by Smooth Newts in Ireland, always finding them more easily in water in the spring and summer.
