is there a certain temp where it can be dangerous for newts in cold water? what can they tolerate? i usally keep my tank pretty cold by putting frozen water bottles in the tank but i notice that some of them have been staying on land? so i'm thinking maybe the water is getting too cold?

Newts prefer (and do better) in cooler temps. Please state the newts you own, setup, and temps your encountering, this will give us a better understanding. They could be leaving the water for other reasons as well.

Some species (like axolotls) do well even down to freezing (with ice skimming over). Most do just fine even down into the 40F's.

It depends a lot on the species. Since you haven't specified what species of newt, there is no way to answer the question. Also, can you be more specific about what the water temp is (for example, how cold is it an hour after you've added the cold bottles?)
