how do i start a worm farm and what do i feed the worms

dig up lots of worms and keep them in the soil you have dug them up in. then just feed vegetable scraps and fruit scraps. avoid acidic foods such as oranges etc. i think you need to keep moisure in the water but im not sure because i dont have a wormery.

Keep it cool and covered with damp newspaper. As Claire said, avoid acidic foods and avoid meat and onions also. Egg shells are good to add for extra calcium for the axies. If you want to buy a small worm farm, check out local gardening / hardware shops - sometimes they stock them for about $20 or so (or they do here anyway)/

We use a 20L bin with a lid (from B&Q), filled with dampened John Innes compost (from B&Q), and loaded with about 100 earthworms (from wormsdirect). We need to buy in worms every few months or so, but they survive quite happily in their bin in the shed, and appear to be breeding.

We feed ours mainly on oatmeal.

Depending on the type of worms, it will take 3-6 months before you start seeing baby earthworms. When you see baby ones, then you know they are breeding.

another way of knowing they are breeding is seeing the eggs in the soil. they are small rounded and sometimes lemon shaped things.they are quite hard.i get lots o them in the soil of the worms i buy and keep them separately from the adult worms so they can hatch and i can feed them to my juveniles. hehe.
