How many in a 25 gallon?

Could I get a second opinion on how many Taricha Granulosa newts I could safely and happily house in a 25 gallon tank. Also how many would you recommend adding at a time. I already have one T.grans in a 10 gallon but am looking to move to a 25 gallon tank already established occupied by fish and a catfish and add more (no I am not mixing them they are swapping homes). Also what would be a safe # to move in at a time. I really do not want Ammonia problems. Any input is appreciated.

That took quite a bit of thinking.. metric system you see..
If I am correct, (100 liters, 80x40x50 container) then I'd say 8-10 animals should be ok in there, providing you can create a land part which doesn't take away too much of the water, with 2 hiding places.

My own setup is 100x40x50. Has approximately the same amount of water in it and has a land part of roughly 0.2m² with plenty of hiding places. I am comfortably keeping up to 15 taricha in it.
They are very social animals and mine split themselves up nicely between land/water.

Thank you Ester.
Your response is appreciated.

I hate to disagree with an answer from a Taricha expert, but I think Ester's estimate is too high.

A standard 25-gallon tank is 24x12x20 inches (~60x30x50 cm). Based strictly on the size of the tank and newts (no personal experience with Taricha), I would say maximum 4.

maybe (if that means knowing what you do not know).. but I never do get these setup sizes right, thanks for pointing it out Jen. If the setup is 24x12x20 then yes, my estimate is too high and I agree with you, 4 is more suitable. I used to have 2 in such a setup, one or two more would have worked.

Ester, I have met many knowlegeable people but have yet to meet anyone perfect. All 3 of us had slightly different opinions I knew at least 4 in a 20 gallon but was on the fence about 5 with a 25 gallon. When you gave me a different answer I thought Oh, maybe I should get out the measuring tape again when Jenn cut your answer in half and said she disagreed with you I thought Oh, Oh

But at least everything is settled. If you 2 ladies agree on 4 and not squeezing in a 5th than 4 it is. I thank you for your time and probably a lot of adding & re-adding. Michelle
