How much nitrate do you allow to let accumulate in your tanks?

Most of my test kits and fish books will say that somewhere less than 30 or 40 ppm should be safe - for fish.

How about newts? In my tanks, nitrate is generally below 10 ppm. If it gets too low, one has to wonder about the plants getting enough grub.

What's nitrates in everybody else's tanks? Are larvae more sensitive than adults?

i use a plant filter in my axolotl tanks, so i have no nitrates. im a little worried about my plants getting enough nutrients but my peace lilly is still flowering. i think im going to start adding phosphorus to my tank because it shouldn{t cuase any problems with the axolotls and some of my peace lilly leaves are starting to get tiny holes in them
