How to add sand to your aquarium for the first time

I just bought some Caribbean super natural sand and I attempted to add it to my aquarium after cleaning it. But the water is still cloudy and I have no idea what to do, so I left it to sit for overnight to see if anything changes. Any advice on what to do?
