Here it is folks: The handy tool you can build at home and use for all sorts of stuff. Turkey basters are great for small jobs, but the Supersucker is for the really big and hard to reach jobs.
It is suitable for harvesting large amounts of daphnia, cleaning the bottom of that 50 gallon tall tank, spraying your pugs with water to keep them from digging up spadefoot toads, and anywhere else you need controlled suction/squirting.
First you will need two pieces of PVC pipe. They can be any length. I found that about one meter long is ideal to start with. The secret is one piece must have an INSIDE diameter slightly larger than the outside diameter of the other.
Cut the length of the larger diameter pipe about 100mm shorter than the small diameter pipe. Now sand/file all the sharp edges smooth.
Next take the small diameter pipe and plug one end with epoxy putty. Once the epoxy hardens, sand it round and smooth.
Now take the end of the large diameter pipe and insert a nozzle of some sort in place. Secure it with epoxy putty and sand smooth. (I used a Pneumatic tool nipple with a barbed hose end on it. the electroplate will not rust.)
Now take the plugged small diameter pipe and cut two grooves about 3mm deep and 20mm apart around the outside diameter of the pipe about a quarter of the length of the pipe away from the plugged end. Then install two appropriately sized O-rings in the groves. Lubricate the o-rings with food grade silicone or vegetable oil.
Now insert the small pipe, plugged end first into the large pie so that the plugged end is closest to the nozzle you installed. Be careful. the first time to put it together, you may need extra lubrication to prevent cutting the o-rings.
Now, use it like a giant syringe for all your supersucking needs!
