Hi Bookie - There are a few things you can do to help the cycle along, but cycling usually takes 30 days or more.

You can possibly cut a few days off by using a filter that has been running on a seasoned aquarium. Taking some of the substrate and ornaments from a seasoned tank will help too.

You can add a heater to the tank that is cycling if it has no axolotls in it. Warmer water can help them cycle "faster". Again we are talking maybe a few days. Just remember to take the heater out and allow time for the tank to return to under 70 degrees before putting an axolotl in there.

The products the pet stores sell that claim to "instantly cycle" your tank generally do not work so I wouldn't waste my money on them.

If you don't already have one you will need a test kit so you can test for ammonia, nitrite , nitrate and ph.

Here is an article on cycling http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/cyclingEDK.shtml

ok thanks. ill try them....i got a aquarium in my brother room. the water real old....its been in there for 3 months. kinda dirty though. i see stuff on the glass. the fake plants n rocks and filter still run. do u think i can put that water in my tank. if put about 40% of that water in my tank n add more water....or i might jus switch the whole tank i dont noe. im stuck. im busy with work. i dont think i can keep him the fidge all day and night. water gets to cold and my mom thinks its nasty..

Bookie - Yes adding some of the water from the other tank will help too.

Moving fake plants or ornaments etc should help too, i guess 20% should be fine... Really in theory it wont speed it up like you think it will a tank needs at least 30 days or + to establish itself fully.

Yeah, but it's not actually the water that contains the bacteria. The filter, substrate and objects in the tank do - so transferring objects from your brother's old tank is more beneficial than just transferring the water - correct me if I'm wrong, anyone. If there is old filter media still in the tank, that's even better to use.

i feel so bad now. i wana give him away to someone who can take care of him...i neva cared bout a aqua pet before. till now. i dont wana see him die..

what do you mean by that? If your tank is not ready, keep the axie in a temp home a bucket is fine as well, you can buy a large tub for 5-10 dollars at walmart. Just need to put in some more time with water changes and your pet should be fine.

Bookie, you can keep him in the fridge for up to and over a week in cases.

You can put him in the tank, and as long as you do regular water changes, I wouldn't worry a whole lot about cycling, especially if you only have one. Just make sure you keep on top of water changes.

there only one problem. im in japan. and all the good pet stores dont understand english so im stuck basically. i want to do a non fish cycle i dont want to kill any fish. i think ima probly wait till i go back to the states to actually start dealing with axies. so ima be busy admiring yalls. it will be easy bc everyone knows english..heheh

so Joan S. so your saying i shouldnt cycle???when u say water change you mean the whole tank water???

I'm using frozen shrimp pieces in mine to cycle.. though it's taking a long time
