Hello, this is my first post here and I am a beginner when it comes to Axolotls. I have been doing a lot of research on everything from cycling to what plants can be used which have all been very helpful!

I have been looking for a 20 gallon tank (as I want 2 axolotls) and have been struggling as all the 20 gallon tanks that I have seen come with filters and lights already built into them (and I know axies are sensitive to filters and waterflow and have no eyelids so not really meant to have a light).

I came across the Hugo-Kamishi Simplicity Aquarium which you can buy a 88L with the dimensions (30x15x12 inches) and a hood, however there are very few reviews out there and I was wondering if anyone has experience with these tanks, or heard much about them?

If not could anyone recommend a good 20 gallon long tank and what filter they used with it as that would be very helpful. Thanks everyone! :)

Hi Vicky and welcome to the forum.
As far as tanks go, it doesn't matter if they have lights and filters. You don't have to switch the lights on, or you can provide several hides for your axolotls. The majority of people also use filters, and as long as you keep the water movement created low (e.g. turn spray bar to the glass, put plants (I've used artificial) underneath the outflow, then the axolotls will be fine.
My 3 mature males are currently in a Fluval Roma 200 litre tank, with lights and filter. They have more room than is necessary, 5 hides and lots of artificial plants. My juveniles are in a similar set up. I don't use the lights, but I find the filters very useful. I have previously had the 3 males in a 125 litre. They got on ok, but it seemed a bit crowded, especially at feeding time.
As long as you are providing enough room and hides, and providing the correct water conditions and parameters, then I think the rest is down to personal preference.

Thank you! :)

Decided to buy the tank and give it a go. I have got a JW Pet Company Fusion 200 air pump and Hydro Sponge II Pro Filter.

If the sponges don't keep up though I will get a filter.

Trying to find an pure ammonia solution so when it gets here I can start cycling however I am struggling as the ones I am finding have things like soap and added smells and such. Do you know of any pure ammonia solutions?

(sorry to keep bothering you! haha)

I have found something called

Kleen Off Household Ammonia

PERFECT FOR FISHLESS FISH TANK CYCLING!

ONLY TO BE USED ON NEW AQUARIUMS BEFORE FISH ARE INTRODUCED AND ONCE YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND THE METHOD OF FISHLESS CYCLING.

Yes, I've used that one for cycling.
Whatever you do, do not sniff it. Seriously.
Best of luck with cycling your tank. Be patient and keep us updated on your progress.

By the way, the air pump/sponge filter should be fine. A lot of people use that sort of thing and find that they are very suitable.

Thank you so much Donna001! :D

Yes I will post updates of my cycling and pictures of my tank and then finally my babies!

Thinking of a golden albino (called Whooper) and leucistic (called Axyl).
