I just got three new axies and put in a tank with my old one and my old one now has like a wound on its leg like a bit mark or scratch, what should i do to heal it?
It sounds like a bite to me. Just keep the water clean. Maybe put some Stresscoat in to help the healing process. Usually if you keep the water clean your axolotl will heal quite fast.
Did you quarantine your new 3 axies or did you just put them into the tank that already had your first axie? If so, that's a no-no. The 3 new axies might be carrying illnesses which may be transfered to your original axie. Not only that, but you're going to create an ammonia spike in your tank.
Oh dear. I can guarantee that one of the axies had been all by itself for well over 30 days before I gave it to Stacey. The other two were together in a large tub with water changes daily - almost like being in quarantine. it could be a bite - axies do like to stack and land on eachother so it is possible a limb got in the way. I have never had any trouble with anyone biting but I think Matthew is probably sensible in suggesting salt baths - axolotls do have remarkable powers of recovery. Also, if an axolotl has lived by itself do you still need to quarantine it - isn't life in isolation a form a quarantine. Just checking for the next time I give any away as I would hate to cause problems for anyone.
Im doing the salt baths n isolation thing, seems to be ok she is stil eating n swimming around ok! yeh i didnt have a problem with them they were all fine together eating etc and i just looked over n looked like she hurt herself, it could have been the rock or somthin as well, guess ill never no! its no problemo! just got my new tank as well just gota get it set up n running
Susan - its just a precaution thing. A solitary axolotl was still in the presence of other axolotls at some point (around birth, etc) and could simply just be a carrier for an unseen disease or illness without being visibly affected itself.
