My Hynobius retardatus spawned this week. I had sticks in the tank but they chose a piece of floating cork bark.

Thats really cool to see, thanks for the pics.

Congratulatrions Michael!
I just love Hynobiids...i can´t wait to have some in a future and witness this fascinating breeding behaviour.

Wow very nice well done.

That's great news, Michael! Thanks for the photos.

Thanks.
Most of the time when I raise Hynobius larvae I raise them communally. I've read where Hynobius retardatus sometimes have big headed larvae that can be canabalistic. Does anybody on the forum have any practical experience with this phonomena?

Nice one, Michael. Good luck raising them. Hynobius are high on my list when I get some animals again...

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
