I may need to find a home

I may need to find a new home for my newt Peter. Peter is a Taricha granulosa. He has been in my care for about 10 years. I am moving to Hawaii and still figuring out if I can take him with me.

My first question is: Can newts fly in an airplane? Would the pressure effect them negatively?

If I can't take them because of Hawaiian restrictions (there are many), I will have to find a good home for him. Peter has a penthouse. His tank is probably over 20 gallons with gravel bottom, pothos plants and drift wood.

My main concern is that he is going to a caring home, if I have to give him up. It may be nice for him to go to a home which already has newts. He has been alone since his buddy past away several years ago.

Greetings, Alex...

suggest you not attempt to move your T. granulosa to HI (even if the state will allow you to do so legally, which I doubt). Most places on that archipelago will be too hot for Taricha. Unfortunately I have limited tank space and am unable to take on more animals at this time: breeding populations of Cynops orientalis, Bombina orientalis and Pseudobranchus axanthias axanthias.

Sincerely,

Hajji

Thank you for your reply Hajji,

Yes, I think you are correct. I won't be able to provide adequate housing for Peter.
Perhaps someone else on this forum will be interested in adopting Peter.
Preferably someone who already has Taricha granulosa newts and is familiar with their care. Of course I would donate all equipment including housing.

Kind regards,
Alex

Hey I would be interested in taking your little man. I, on the other hand, would be be able to cover the cost of the shipping. I live in FL. I currently have a 20 gallon with two fire bellys. But I love newts and the would love him like he was my own

I wish i could take him ( i do have experience with Taricha ), but since we are in different countries i don't think that would work. I don't think its legal to ship across borders.
EDIT: Sorry, i didn't notice you are from Chicago!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
