I just had a brilliant idea to build my lotls a lego castle to play in, hide in, climb on.
The question is though, would the plastic be toxic to them? If so that snafoos that idea in the bottom. Does any one know?:bowl:

That sounds awesome!! I dunno lego is made for kids and the boat sets are obviously meant to be okay for the bath... I'll check the Lego Website!

Oh but lego has those super sharp deadly-to-feet corners :( might not be safe for squishy little lotls :(

Maybe, just maybe, after the castle is built, you could take a file and file all the sharp corners down. It could take a while, but at least you'd feel safer about your castle.

Lego is safe, chemically speaking, but if you are worried about it rinse the parts and rub them dry with a soft cloth. We've built things before for aquarium decorations and Lego has so many shapes and sizes to choose from. The main problem we had was floating due to trapped air inside the pieces. Try to assemble it in a bucket of water to prevent trapped air bubbles. We even went so far as to put aquarium gravel in the pieces to help weigh it down. Worked very well. Makes me sad that I don't have any pics of that 125 gallon tank to show you. It had a Lego castle with Vallisnaria growing on either side. The angle fish would swim in and out of Repunzel's tower window. aaaah memories.

great idea!!! my son has a stupid amount of lego that he doesn't even play with (GRRRRR)!! :D

According to all the sites I have seen. Legos are non toxic. They would have to be, and pass stringent tests considering they are for children. CHildren do love putting things in their mouths and Lego has not overlooked this factor. Turns out, Lego products are made out of ABS, which stands for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, is more stable and holds colors better than does cellulose acetate. This tough plastic is also used extensively to make items such as automobile parts and building materials. ABS is still used today in the production of LEGO toys. In addition to the properties noted above, ABS is non-toxic, rustproof, heat-resistant, resistant to most organic acids and diluted inorganic acids, resistant to salt and animal oils and fats. Oh, and ABS is also sterile. Soooo as long as I use perhaps Duplex Lego blocks, as they are more rounded or file the pointy ones they should be absolutely safe! NOTE: DO NOT use tiny pieces e.g. the Lego flowers, little flags ect that can fit into your axolotls mouth!!!!! Duplex does sound more safe, rounded more soft edges and big pieces. :D The possibilities are endless!!! Has anyone else any more ideas on this line?? I would love to hear them. My goldfish tank has marbles in it,and the fish play with them!!:p
