Hello all, I am in the process of setting up a tank for some popei newts and I'm finding a lot of conflicting information on the internet at what depth of water they prefer.

Deciding between a 55 gal and a 40 gal tank, the 40 gal has less height but more depth, so i'm thinking their water depth will be the deciding factor

I'm keeping them in a water depth of 25 cm right now, but I've kept them in 15 cm and a lot deeper than 25 cm. All these depths resulted in active animals, breeding and no issues. That also goes for keeping them in water with and without a current. Didn't have problems with both. They don't need a big terrestrial area as well. I hardly see them come out of the water. A little piece of floating cork bark is sufficient. I've kept them below 10 C, but I would suggest keeping them a bit warmer. I've never had problems with warm temperatures during the summer, but I guess they rely on cooler night temperatures during this period. Larvae definitely need warmer temps than 15 C in my experience. Juveniles quickly become more hardy. Most important advice regarding to the enclosure I think is that you should give them enough plants and spots to hide, so they can get out of each others eyesight now and then.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
