Identification Help, Please

On the shore of Lake Erie in New York State, I occasionally find a dead, very large salamader washed up on the beach by the surf. I would appreciate it if someone can identify what kind of salamander it is. The description follows:

These creatures are 6 to 10 inches (15 - 25 cm) long. They are gray to dark brown. Their shape is somewhat similar to that of a catfish, with a large head and tapering to the back of the body. They have thick muscular tails. Their legs are very small; they seem much too small to be of use on land. I believe they have two whisker-like protrusions on their mouths (but my memory may be wrong about that part). I have only seen them dead, but in that state, they seem to be slimy.
