For those of you who were helping me thanks. He's gone to the VET now and they are keeping him overnight. Turned out to be both a fungus infection and those ciliad things or whatever they are... I feel terrible and I think it's the new girl that's done it so she will need treatment and I guess the whole tank will now too.

Pray for me boy because I've already cried enough just having to leave him there.

Any advice on how to clean the tank properly after this before he comes back?

Boil you gravel, plastic plants and substrates for about 10 mins.

If using a corner filter get new sponge, carbon pellets etc and clean inside of the body and impellor with hot water.

Clean the glass and seals of your tank with soft sponge and warm water and fill with tap water (I expect aussie water is loaded with chloramines and chlorine too!). Empty it and replace water several times over a few days.

Try and do same for everything going in to the tank. For once those nuisance additives the water companies put in can help clean your system without going overboard and leaving you wondering whether you have flushed out enough.

Don't forget when you have it all done you'll have new tank syndrome and need to begin the nitrogen cycle from scratch. If you can, try and keep your babies in plastic tubs for a while and let tank cycle again.

Best of luck

Firstly my filter is an Eheim on a low flow rate with a spray bar (just so we know it's not a flow problem by the way)... should those materials in there be boiled up too? They are those ceramic bio filter thingies. Also should I replace my hoses? Once I've done this how long should I let it cycle for, just so I know how long a process this is going to be.

In the meantime, would keeping them in a plastic tub with the aerator and a little filter be okay? Would I need a little filter if I fed them separately and cleaned up their poo for this period? Just want to know as I just gave away my small tank and will need to buy a new tub (don't want to keep in buckets as I have a cat) and possibly a new filter. little filters are cheap though so I don't mind. It's always good to be able to set up a sep tank for both axies and fishies.

Cheers for this Mikki, most appreciated.

Hi Celia, to my mind little filters aren't worth the effort. Best buying a turkey baster or similar to lift out pieces of poo and do frequent water changes whilst in temporary home.

Don't boil anything that won't take it or has a seal (like motor on a filter unit). Just put things in a tank of tap water and let it's chlorine do the work for you. Then all you need to do is change the tap water frequently to ensure that there is sufficient chlorine in water to take care of the task for you. Typically 24-48 hours all chlorine in tap water has evaporated off or reacted with what it can.

there is a page on this site for tank cycling it can take a few weeks so you may need to be patient. I have collected a few small tanks from boot sales plus heaters and filter units. I keep them in the garage and it gives me flexibility for disasters, male/female separation and so on.
