Drowning is unlikely, but you should provide lots of aquatic plants, driftwood, and other structure for them to climbs and rest on.
You might also add some cork bark or other floating wood for them to rest on, although they may never use it.
Ah okay, I got a float for them now. I have a question that I have always wondered about. I hear information about how newts have the ability to take in oxygen through the skin. Is this true for alpine newts or is it species specific? In my other aquarium where I had no sponge filter and no plants they went up for air quite often. Now I rarely see them go up for air so do you think the oxygen rich water is allowing them to uptake oxygen through the skin?
