Hi guys

i just want to ask if copper tubing are toxic to newts?
i know they are toxic to shrimps. but fishes are ok

coil-type-heat-exchanger-250x250.jpg

the reason i asked this is because. i suddenly thought of using copper tubings to cool down my 3 small tanks with 1 single chiller. i thought of copper tubings because the are very flexible and they have excellent good thermal transfer.

this allows me not to mix the water in the 3 small tanks to be pumped to the single chiller. which i know is bad as different species of newts have different toxins which can kill eachother. it also allows me to use small wattage pumps example 2watt instead of a big pump which creates alot of heat. it also save the troubles of making overflow pvc tubes and avoid flooding the pvc tubes are choked by dirt over time.

there is how the design goes

1) top most tank will connect directly to chiller via a small 2w filter to cool down
2) 2nd tank below will have a small 2w filter connected to a copper cooling coil as shown above, this coil will be in tank1 to cool down water in tank2.
3) 3rd tank, same thing will have a coil in tank2 to cool down water in tank3.

what do u think?

thanks

hi seth

thanks for advice as usual.
i could not find these stainless steel coils. instead i bought 2m of dia 7mm stainless steel tubings.
and i manually bend them to form a frame which is small enough to be dipped into the tank.
this frame will be at the back of the tank and hidden and camo by driftwood. lolx hahahaa...

i am testing it out this weekend, will update the results.
i hope it will work

cheers!

hi seth and guys

i have tested yes, the stainless steel tubing/coil concept does work for multiple tanks. it takes slightly more time for the tank2 below to cool down to the same temp as tank1 which is directly connected to the chiller.
i guess the longer the tube/coils the better the transfer rate.

hope this helps anyone who wants to cool down mutiple tanks with a single chiller.

cheers!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
