Thank goodness. He's been finicky about eating for the past 2 weeks. Before that, he was eating a worm about 3/4 of his length almost everyday. When I got him, his hips poked out but since then I am confident when I say I have plumped him up to a healthy size.

Avoid Red Wrigglers... Most newts despise them, and will be very reluctant to consume them. The only species I have owned that would accept them was a 'paddle tailed newt', a voracious species. Stick to garden worms, chopped Canadian night crawlers, black worms, blood worms and white worms to form the staple. Supplement with very small wax worms, 'handicapped' very small crickets, flightless fruit flies(on the water surface), and occasionally live brine shrimp. Looks like you have done a fine job recouping his health. Well done.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
