Sorry it's blurry, it's a Chinese firebelly.

Is that when you acquired it? Sometimes newts that are stressed or under nourished for whatever reason seem to lose some of their secondary sexual characteristics. Once they are settled and eating properly the sexing them is much easier because their body shape returns to normal.
I have read accounts of some newts that have actually changed sex, but I've no idea if that's even possible!

Yes that's when I got it, it was near death from starvation and stress. It's amazing it survived. My other newt got along with it but for months has been attacking it so the young newt has been stressed, so bad I'm going to have to re home it, if it's a male that makes a lot of sense now. Apparently my big male being 18 doesn't tolerate any other newt around.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
