$125 plus shipping for a sub adult GFP purple axolotl is what someone offered to sell me one for. Is this a fair price? Let me know what you think.

What AuntieJude says is absolutely right. You only need to look at the huge differences in prices for named species and similar sized animals where people either post a price not really appreciating the full value or they are knowingly quoting it to catch the one or two new hobbiest. You see it here and elsewhere eg the reptile forum where red Solling salamandra are advertised from £55 all the way to £165 for animals newly morphed. You'll get Tingitana quoted in excess of £50 yet you'll find them at £10 too.
The serious hobbiest rarely has one animal of each species and very quickly you'll be paying the equivalent of a month's mortgage or the cost of repairing your central heating. Commercial set ups can justify these prices as they have substantial overheads and even as a private breeder costs mount too and so prices can be justified. To feed my collection each week I spend £24 on crickets alone. I need to buy supplements and food to gut load them. Thankfully they don't need additional heating or lighting and I can collect inverts from the yard.
You'll get all the car sales pitch re vet checked, fully treated, only ones in the country etc. A sure sign to be wary of are the people who don't give a price and ask you to pm them. That way no one gets to know you're being done. Yes, the forums do say quote a price, but that's not always the case. Keep an eye out for private breeders who historically have large and varied stock turn overs.
I've knowingly over paid for the simple reason I wanted the animal. This is usually because they are rarely available (not necessarily because they are rare). I have a substantial collection now and when I do sell or give away surplus stock (no one says they have to cost an arm and a leg) I like to put the development of the subspecies first in captivity knowing that I might be out of pocket but then it's my love and interest.
So you have to ask yourself do you want the animal. Are you a patient person who can wait another year or so till the next ad? If not, then you are going to have to pay for it!
