Can morphing spotted salamanders still swim to an island to climb out of the water? I've created a slope up to a sand/gravel shelf, but I've also read about people putting in "islands" in their setups.
Also, is mopani wood safe for spotted salamanders? Specifically, are the tannins it releases into the water safe? I've seriously been considering acquiring a large piece and boiling out the tannins (I should have started soaking it weeks ago) but I've read that it still releases some into the water for awhile afterwards.
Other than sand/gravel or large rocks, what has worked well for your morphing salamanders/newts to climb out on?
