i cannot for the life of me tell if these are japanese fire bellies or chinese. petsmart said they were japs but i cannot tell from the pics i've looked at and i dunno if i trust petsmart.

They sure do a good impression of Cynops orientalis in my book but I'm not a Cynops expert.

100% Cynops orientalis, according to me...
they seem to be at least 2 males and 1 female...but it's just my first opinion!:)

These are my newts, in my opinion they look the same and I allways thought they were orientalis.
I'm no expert either so I may be wrong as well. Makes me intrested in the findings of other people here

Yep cynops orientalis alright.
A little bit more orange bellies than I am used to.

Crustaceans anyone?

The brighter orange in my pictures is probably due to the flash. It's actually a bit darker then in the pictures. (but not much)

Tnx for confirming

Cynops orientalis is the ONE newt petsmarts always seem to have, then again, ALL MY LFS always have these and nothing else. go figure? I noticed petsmarts have them listed as: Cynops pyrrhogaster Japanese Fire Belly Newt. Yeah, Right! These seem to be the "starter" newt as they have so many in the trade. This newt is easily accessed and reaccessed after someone returns them dead. (Have a friend that worked at a LFS and told many stories about returns. Want to hear some? hehe)

There is also a LIGHTER COLORED variation that makes people say, what is this newt?
