how exactly do you "plant" java moss on land?

do you just kinda put it on the dirt?

and how wet does it have to be in the cage, could it survive with a couple mists a day?
 
you don't. it'll dry up you have to have it atleast partially submerged.
 
To grow it on land it has to have a pretty much permanently damp/wet land, i.e. inside a terrarium for something like a dart frog.
 
Yeah. IME even in a closed viviarium it only can grow near a water feature or in an area with constant wetness. What I would do would be to put some around/ in the water feature first. When it grows, take pieces and try them in spots of the tank you want to and see if they take.
