Hi guys!

Quick question...will java moss/java fern grow in a tank with no substrate, or does it need a firm bed to grow in, like sand?

Java moss needs no support whatsoever, although it will cling to anything it can get hold off.
Java fern grows best attacked to big rocks or pieces of wood. It can grow with no support, but in my experience it grows veeeeeery slow and doesn´t reach it´s full potential.

So, with the moss, it is ok just initially to wedge it under a few rocks/decorations and as it grows it will start attatching itself?

Correct. Or you can tie it on with a bit of mono-filament fishing line to get ti started.
