Hi, I am a very new (about 3 weeks in) “grandma” of an axolotl. We got one for our 8 year old, not realizing all the work that had to go into it. We did not know that we had to cycle the tank for a couple weeks before putting the axolotl in it so I believe the tank is cycling now. I don’t know what to do. The water parameters:

pH: 7.0
Ammonia: 1.0 ppm
Nitrite: .25 ppm
Nitrate: 5.0 ppm

I know those numbers are bad. Should I tub it? What does that all entail? I’ve gotten really confused/overwhelmed trying to read through all these forums searching for the answer. It seems to be acting normal and it looks normal. No tail or gill curling. No looks of burns or bulging. What should I do?

I’m also doing 40-50% water changes for the past couple days. It’s eating and pooping just fine. No color change in the aquarium light. Looks a litte more pink with no aquarium light.

I would tub until the tank is cycled. Tubing is easy I tub my axolotls. I still use an air stone for my tubing but you don't have to and I use safe to remove chlorine, ammonia, and chloramine to clean cold water. After that I add my axolotl and do 100% water changes each day and repeating the steps. Some use prime or tetra or API to remove all the contamination in their tap water. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I am in the same position. So you do 100% water changes in the tub when it starts to gather ammonia and leave the original tank until it cycles?

Let the tank cycle and as it does so tub the axolot and for me I do 100% percent water changes each day until the tank is ready.

She’s not eating, her tail and gills have shrunk, she’s lot a lot of weight, and we’ve checked her water levels with no negative results
