I am moving into an apartment in a little over a week, but my friend has a diminishing cockroach problem. I'm moving in because he gets lonely, is low in money after losing a roommate, and I need to move away from my parents. I have three beautiful axolotls, but he says the only way he'll allow them is if I have some sort of lid capable of keeping the cockroaches from getting the water. I know about the full hoods, but are they necessary? Would a screen lid work alright? What else can I do to keep the problem from getting worse?
He's not a slob, they were there when he moved in several months ago.

I would be really leery of moving into a place with roaches. Why don't you both move somewhere else together? But if you're undeterred, I would put a screen top on top and cover that with a tulle fabric, sewing it together around the lid like a sleeve and hemming the bottom. I have done this with tops to keep tiny morphs in.

He's locked in a lease for the next six months.
Remedies have been moderately affective, and I won't be there much anyway. He's the only person I really trust enough to live with, and I can't afford to live on my own.

That's a nasty situation. Wish you all the luck, because it sounds that keeping roaches out of your aquarium isn't your biggest problem. I'm with otterwoman with the screen.

I feed my axolotls roaches so they arnt a particular danger other than introducing bacteria, the axolotls quite like them. As the previous posters mentioned, you would be better off dodging a roach motel. I have always found that withholding rent gets a landlord to sort problems out ie roach infestations
