Kia Ora and Greetings.
I have just been given an axolotl. It is amazing. My children have asked to touch it. I have said no way, but now I want to know do they like to be touched or left alone to do their thing.

I live in Hamilton New Zealand, where I teach Music at a middle school during the week, on the weekends My oldest sons and I run a sound reinforcement company we supply sound systems and crew for bands and events. I am a solo Dad of five boys three of whom are still at home.

Finally how do I know if its happy? I have done some research and know what to look for if it is stressd, unwell or unhappy. At the moment it seems healthy and happy. Oh it also has 6 toes on its right front foot. Whats up with this? is that common or some form of regeneration gone wrong?.

Its been the best ever gift and I am keen to see it live a long life so any help or advice towards this end would be gratefully received.

Welcome Kia Ora. Go to axolotl section in this forum to get more specific info on axies, about cycling, illnesses, food etc. But I'll answer you quickly. Don't let your boys touch the axie, it may damage its slime coat. And don't worry about his 6th toe. Its quite normal in axies having extra toes, nothing to worry about

Thanks for the input and prompt reply. I have told the boys no touching. They so love it when i'm right.

Kia Ora Ian,

Let it bite at your kids fingers. Its an interesting feeling. Feels like velcro.
