My Kweichows have been doing this more and more these last few weeks so i've moved them to a deeper aquarium. After i took these pics of the "tylo waltz" i saw them doing a Pleurodeles like amplexus...though didn't see any spermatophores....just got to cross my fingers for eggs at this stage.

Nice looking animals Andy. Good luck with them. Keep us updated

I'm glad to see more captive breeding of this species. Good job. Now only if my animals would take a hint!

Andy:

Awesome news. Such gorgeous newts. Do you think moving them to the deeper tank made the difference?

Good luck with them!

My Verrucosus still dance regularly but seem to be shooting blanks.

Hi Gord, there was a little more to it than just moving them to water....though i have had animals breed after a big change to their set up. Worth a shot with your Verrucosus though.
These animals were wintered for about four months at about 58/60f (though there were times the temp was a little lower). As the temperature rose to the mid 60's i started spraying their tank more frequently and also feeding them quite often. At about 68f the male entered the water and was in love with anything that moved. Females would visit the male in the water but only sporadically, but at about 70f all females entered the water and stayed their dancing with the male. It was at this point i moved them to an aquarium nine inches deep (read the water should be as deep as the longest newt in one of Tims posts...my longest newt is eight inches or so) with a temperature of about 70f/72f. The next day there were eggs.

thanks andy,
I just acquired 3 and read your post.
i hope you can hatch them out . sounds very exciting. good luck with them. I will use your advice for next spring and see how well mine do.
also were your newts always that color or is that a breeding color they take on.
mine are a little darker orange than yours.

Hi Doug, these animals are always this colour...some Kweichows are darker some are a very bright orange. The female in the first few pics is very nicely coloured...she has more orange than usual

Hi Andy, i've just caught up with this thread....CONGRATULATIONS.
You certainly had to work hard to get some of your animals through their quarantine period, and are now reaping the benefits of your good husbandry regime.
My animals, from the same shipment are all well, but I have not tried to bring them into breeding condition, as I have my hands full at the moment rearing 1000+ Salamandra.
I'm sure that you will be successful in rearing the eggs. :))

Thanks Mike...a 1000 larvae, wow! thats both fantastic and scary at the same time!
yes, it's certainly been hard work getting some of these guys to good health. In fact, i still have one that isn't with this group...the one that had the sore on it's arm. The animal has healed, but in the process it lost the use of it's arm. It's kind of hard to explain, but it looks like the arm is on backwards. I'm waiting till it's immune system is stronger and i'll then cut the arm off i think....give it a chance to grow a new one.

But it's all been worth it, i'm really happy i've got these eggs. I think it's just the one female thats spawned at the moment...hoping to get some more off the other females in a week or two as i did see the others courting a few weeks after the first.

I just caught up with this too... stupendous news Andy!!! There is no adequate emoticon for this - try to picture me applauding and simultaneously jumping up and down.
