My once ill Lesser Siren is now doing great. The gills seem to be doing well and have regenerated decently. The Lesser Siren is now living in a 35 gallon long with a sand bottom and various plants. There are many flat rocks and a air filter running all the time. With no other tank mates to compete with the Lesser Siren is flourishing.

I have to say that this Siren is very shy and very picky when it comes to eating. I know other keepers feed their Sirens pellets of all sorts but mine won't take pellets and barely eat frozen brine shrimp or blood worms. Earthworms are the preferred food. Other Sirens I've had were very aggressive eaters and made tons of noise eating or borrowing. This Lesser Siren is very elusive and quiet. I barely ever get the chance to take photos of it. When ever I pull the camera out it runs and hides. Here are pics of some very short lived photo shoots.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
