Hi everyone! I just upgraded my axolotl to a 29 gallon and I wanted to get some floating plants (I am favoring frogbit). However, I never dealt with lighting before and I am a little confused. I was wondering if anyone knows a good aquarium light that I could use. Something that wouldn’t brake the bank and is not insanely bright would be amazing. Any other tips for aquarium lighting is greatly appreciated!

with the advent of light emitting diodes (leds) lighting an aquarium can be done a lot cheaper than normal florescent lightbulbs, if there is a hood over the tank then standard t5 - t8 bulb can be changed to a like for like led replacement, just make sure that the led bulb is the same or lower wattage then the rated fittings. if there isn't a lid then there led banks that stand over the tank (clip on sides). or there are submersible and even strip lighting that can be used. for growing plants a full spectrum or red/violet are best for growing.
the higher the lumen the brighter the light.
always make sure there are plenty of hidings places, caves etc..

Thank you so much for your reply! I’m only a beginner when it comes to lighting so I’m a little confused with some of the terms you used. I do have a mesh lid so a light would be able to rest on top of it. I’m looking for a light that’s not to bright but would be able to provide for frogbit. If you or anyone knows any lights they like I would really appreciate it. Thank you again for all of your help! I hope this made sense:)

as an example of a cheap overhead light I've added an image for reference, this is for UK use but there should be similar in the US.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
