It's a warm afternoon in May, in fact, one of the first warm days since Winter. In the last 24 hours, the water temperature in a weed-choked pond has risen sharply. Among the weeds at the surface of the pond, smooth newts (Lissotriton (formerly Triturus) vulgaris) are courting and spawning:
