I've had my axy for 10 months or so and he doesnt have a tank mate. He seems very happy and not lonely at all because we try and interact with him as much as possible. My Mum and I sit and talk to him and i sometimes play peek-a-boo with him. I know that sounds weird, but i think it works, it gives him something to do and stops him from getting lonely.

They don't "need" companionship, but they do some of the most hilarious things together. So it's up to you what you want and can take care of.
