Lotl love: does your lotl like you?

No other creature I live with ever inspired me to join a forum to better care for them lol

And a lotl in danger of being eaten by a killer giant tadpole? Lol.

It was when he was an even smaller tadpole himself! He was in a tank with five of his siblings but he was very slow in growing compared to the rest.

Ohh my tank is right next to my bed so sometimes I catch them looking at me when I wake up. I think they watch me sleep and come over to the side of the tank when I wake. Sometimes I watch them back and gosh like 30 minutes pass with us staring at each other.

It is reassuring to know we are not the only people to do this: "There was a time when I thought a great deal about the axolotls. I went to see them in the aquarium at the Jardin des Plantes and stayed for hours watching them, observing their immobility, their faint movements. Now I am an axolotl." (Julio Cortazar, 'Axolotl') Such a perfect description, yes? I haven't yet become an axolotl, but I do spend so much time watching Boris doing little or nothing that I've now put a little kiddie stool in the hallway. Sitting there, I find myself entering a calm, almost trance-like state. On second thoughts, maybe I am becoming an axolotl!!?!?

One of my Axolotls floats and I pet her head once in a while. My sister is trying ti train hers to let her pet it but it doesn't seem to be getting any better, lol.

I have a 2" Melanoid who quite normally comes and stares at me when I am in bed. I got 4 Melanoids and she was by far the smallest, so has a special place in my heart, lol.

Haha, well, one of mine came over to the glass to greet me the other day; stared at me for a minute (while I was kneeling in front of the tank totally in love with him, admiring his everytyhing), then he... yawned and swam away! :( I'm too boring for my axies! tough love

Just keeping you in your place and on your toes! They really do have us wrapped around their delicate little lotl fingers don't they? I have become absolutely obsessed with axolitls (thanks to the 'Accidental Axolitl' poster for my new favourite word!) - I badly want a couple of 3-inch babies now (smaller would be adorable but too nerve-wracking I suspect).

Both my male axies follow me around whenever im in the room. think they want food :p but they swim up to the surface when i look down and i've got an underwater camera they love to explore, so many beautiful picture and video moment. They are no cowards :)

You are so right! I continue to be amazed at how quickly these soft little squishy creatures with no teeth or claws learn not to fear us massive creatures leaning down at them. Their little faces smile trustingly up at us as they reach up towards us with their delicate hands. And I'm sure it's about more than food. They are definitely smarter than they may first appear!

Of my ever growing family of 7 lotls, one is very affectionate, he is always floating at the top of the tank and peering at us as we watch tv, my other adult male and female give me longing stared and often stand up to greet me, my oldest juvie swims around when he sees me.

Our other three are still skittish around us as we have only had them 3 days today, and they have been moved twice in that time (we were only meant to get one more, but came home with three, so had to buy a bigger thank in a rush!)

Though I am currently in the dog house with all my adults and my oldest Juvie, firstly because I moved the juvie in to their tank on the other side of the partition, so they could no longer attract our attention while we watched tv, and secondly because I stole the boys girls friend from the after she laid her first clutch of eggs. I moved the Juvies partition to the middle of the tank and moved her in with the Juvie till the end of spawning season. One of my males spends a huge part of his day staring longingly through the partition at the female. My oldest juvie however is ecstatic to have a friend, he/she follows my female around the tank like a lost puppy and ignores us humans even at feeding time! I feel so unloved at the moment lol

My goldfish know people apart and follow me around... and if they can do it, I'm sure an axol can! :p
Reading this thread makes me ridiculously excited for when mine finally arrive. They sound like they have such personalities!

They certainly do. They really are the most entertaining little creatures. You will soon be just as addicted as the rest of us! Lol. :D

A bit of off-topic Thursday Funnies: my girl Mex doesn't seem to know that Axolotls do not like flowing water:) instead she just climbs right under the filter outflow and allows the water to pour over her beautiful round model-like body:)))) she's also unaware that curled gills are a sign of stress and that she isn't supposed to like the light! I seriously need to educate her on axolotl basics:))

Mine love me at feeding time

My lad Boris is the same about light - he deliberately comes to the front of his tank to sit in the winter sun. As the sunlight moves, so does Boris. He loves to hang immobile from his plants, having a bit of a sunbake and a ponder. He's also very fond of a float in the top half or near the surface of his tank. If I approach the tank, he lowers his body so he can gaze adoringly up at me. So I'm starting to think there are very few lotl 'basics' behaviour-wise, unless being incredibly weird is a basic.

So now, several months after posing this question, here is my pseudo-scientific conclusion: Boris is not just begging for food or showing curiosity (though he does lots of both). There's a little lotl love in there too. My evidence, you ask? First, his strongest preference is for someone who never feeds him. Second, he sulks if ignored. Third, he definitely seeks interaction with his two favourite humans, and fourth, yay, I'm one of them.

Ergo, my lotl likes me! QED.

Titus and I can stare at each other for pretty much forever. Last night I stood a few feet away from the tank and moved from side to side, and his head turned to follow me wherever I went. I have a chair right in front of my tank, and pretty much every time I sit down to watch him, he'll come right up to the glass to watch me back!
