Lumpy axolotl?

This is my axolotl Oro! I’ve had him/her a couple weeks now and they’re currently staying in a tub until my tank finishes up it’s cycle. Feeding blood worms twice a day (as many as he/she can eat) and changing the water after each feeding as well. Currently waiting on pellets in the mail from Lotl axolotl.com (after much research into finding a more nutritious option than bloodworms with minimal risk).

Recently I’ve noticed they’re stomach is quite lumpy! At the time of the first 2 pics, they had just been fed (hence the dirty tub) and had also taken a poo earlier in the day. Is this lumpiness normal? Should I be worried? They are eating very well!

also - his/her gills have been slightly curled since attempting to fly yesterday when they launched themselves out of the tub. (Thankfully I was right there and they landed in the bowl I use for water changing!) there’s now a lid on the container (just sitting on top with a gap exposed) lol.

Thanks in advance!

because of the age it is quite normal to see lumps in the torso as food is being digested and the internal guts are pushed outward.
Ah thank you! That puts my mind at ease.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
