I got a MarineLand Filter, Bio-Wheel power filter 200.

Its jet seems quite strong and its humming which I beleive it a bit loud...I know I can put an object as an obstable to deteriorate the jet into the water but will the humming bother my axolotl?

Should I change filter types or am I being paranoid?

Thanks

If the noise seems to be stressing out your pet then I would remove the filter.

And if the water flow is too fast I would be careful.

What size is your tank by the way?

Does your filter look like this?

I looked it up on the net. :ha:
:errr::errr::errr:

My axo's in the fridge right now enjoying his spa treatment so he hasnt seen his new and improved 30 gallon tank yet.

I dont know if it will stress him out, I simply noticed how loud it was and yes YES thats the filter!!! It looks exactly like that!!!

I spoke to Rayson and he told me to get a spray bar but the sound still worries me a bit.

I use a Penguin 150 on a 20 gallon tank, and it works OK. Honestly not my favorite HOB filters (AquaClears are MUCH nicer, and only a few bucks more), but it works. It shouldn't be very loud. I'd turn it off and wriggle the impellor around- it might not be sitting correctly. Most of these filters run louder for their first day or two than they ever do after, too. People say it's not true, but I've seen probably 30 of them that quieted down after running for a day or two.

You can't use a spraybar on a HOB filter. You can try putting something in front of it to block the flow, though. I've seen people cut a piece of plastic pipe in half and glue it to the front of the filter and they say that helps. The other alternative is to put things in the aquarium in front of the filter to help break up the flow.

I let the filter run for a few days and the sound wasnt leaving. I went to the shop and spoke to the owner and he told me I can exchange it for a different filter. I beleive exchanging it would be the best option. So I'll be doing that tomorow once it's dried out and back in the box.

I know everyone suggests canister but its kinda expensive >.<!!

Canisters are pretty expensive. Here in the US we can get the cheapest Eheims for around $70. Dunno what they go for in Canada, or what your budget is, but for an item that will make your life easier for the next 20 years, it's not a bad deal. A HOB will work just as well for you- thousands of people have used HOBs on axolotls (including myself!), and they do indeed work. I really like AquaClear HOBs- I think they work better than most other types. They're also silent, and you can control the water flow in them. They're a couple bucks more than other HOBs, but not a whole lot more. and they work out to be MUCH cheaper in the long run, because they're designed so that you rinse out a sponge instead of throwing away a cartridge & buy a new one.

The cheapest Eheims is 129.99$ and the cheapest canister filter RENA is 139.99$

I returned my Marineland Filter 200 which was 36.99$ and folded to the forums people's advice and got myself a canister filter RENA.

It took me over two damn hours to stick the hose to the right joints with brute force...ended up calling my man-friend to do it.....and after another two hours of setting up, its done!!! Its also working wonderfully!!

You were all right, it was the best choice out there and with the spray bar, the pressure's pretty nice!!

Though while installing it...my friend had the bright idea of leaning on the glass top and cracked it...so he owes me a new top >.<!!

I was nice of the fish shop to let you take it back even though you had already used it.

Good luck with your axolotl!!!!
:p:p

Thanks for all the help anyone bu I've fallen to the needs of my axo and got a canister and lowered the water flow. He seems in heaven and spends his day staring at my dogs and cat!
