Before I start I know their tank needs divided I just havent found a store carrying craft mesh yet.

The towel over the tank is temporary. Also ... Petco has the $1 per gallon sale so they are getting a new tank :)

The towel on top is temporary ... Dang cat keeps drinking out of the tank and the mesh topper is taking a while to get here

How can you tell if the babies are eating?

They're cuties. :)

You can tell if they're eating by the swelling of their bellies. They get pretty round after feeding. Or you could just stalk them and watch them eat, which is what I like to do. :3

I am worried they may not be eating ... they only come out after we sleep every night ... And they wont eat in front of us ... i have even tried waving food in front of their faces with the tongs

They are only 1 1/2 and 2 inches

Hm, what kind of food are you feeding them?

frozen bloodworms and shrimp pellets ... I expected 4 inch Juvi's ... However cultures aren't doable I have no room. I plan on a earthworm only diet when they are bigger but I don't know what to do for now .. I

I did notice on the right side of both of them they have large black spots ... Hopefully tummies?

When my newest juvie wasn't eating I "bottle-fed" him bloodworms from the turkey baster. Slowly dropping them in front of his face made him realize they were food. Also wiggly pieces of earthworm seem to be a very enticing meal fed by tongs :) I think when they're little they really love food to move. Also, kinda gross, but if they're eating you'll know because they'll be pooping all over the place! Messy kids.

LOL I don't think I can tell if they are pooing with just how teeny they are

I got both to eat today :D Just picking up bloodworms in the tongs and dropping them in front of their faces :) They only ate one each but Hey ... At least I know they are eating :)

Very good! Sometimes you have to move the food around to make them realize its tasty stuff. :)

At this age sparse gills are fairly normal correct?

That's one leucistic, I just have a barebottom tank. Mine are tiny I know but I don't mind as long as they are eating.

I forgot to post coming home pictures :)

I just want to note ... Mudkip is only curling his gills because he hates the camera.

Poor guys are VERY upset right now ... The tank is divided, I did get their 20 long though :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
