Hello all
I have been on this site for a few years but have never really introduced myself. I work with coldwater fish, turtles, newts and salamanders here in Denmark. I also maintain a large collection of cold hardy cacti, yuccas, agaves and other cold hardy succulents as well as cold hardy carnivorous plants and plants from the Drakensberg, South Africa.
I have european genus Salamandra outside permanent for some years now. One small young group of the nominate species from Wien, and one single, potential mom, from Porto, Portugal. This is a genus I hope to be lucky enough to work more with.
I have T vulgaris breeding in my artificial ponds as well as ranas and bufo bufo. The latter being with very nice rustred colouration. I live on top of a sandy, windy hill so its only the tough guys that survives here. However, I have during the past 4 years made this a good amphibian home - digging with my bare hands 12 new artificial ponds. When I moved in only some very large retired Bufos and ranas were here, now I have 1000s with the T vulgaris being the latest invader of my garden.
Not that many years ago Pelobates also lived here and I hope they will come again as they live close by.
I have a 800 sqm fenced turtle area with so far 17000 l water and lots of space on land. I keep a small group of emys orbicularis here. There will be built more pond in that area so the animals can wander betwin them.
I have over the years worked with many cold water fish of generas like Fundulus and Aphanius. Currently I am focusing on Fundulus julisia and Aphanius anatolia complex. I breed only fish of known provenance and with to do the same with my amphibians. I have earlier worked with the goodeid family and have breed almost all species, but I do this no longer as I dont have the facilities to keep them above 10C in winter. This is the fish that lives with the various neotenic Ambystoma in the mexican highland.
I am currently preperring my old fishhouse into a more salamander friendly room. Temperatures will follow 4C in winter and 16-20C in summer. I am planning more european newts and salamanders and hopefully 4 large tanks for Mudpuppies. Will see what I can get. I like to see how animals and plants behave during the various temperatures of the seasons in the cold aquarias.
I have earlier worked with Hyla arborea and breed it in one of my greenhouse, I plan on starting up with them again this comming spring.
