Hey everyone. This is my first post on here so bare with me 😅. I've recently finished cycling my axolotls tank and I put him in yesterday. He has been active and eating great. He also pooped. Today I noticed he has pinkish coloring on his back leg that I have never seen. I'm wondering if its a bacteria or maybe the sand substrate rubbing his leg raw? He was turned for the first 2 months thats I had him, I changed his water daily. I'm using seachem black flourite sand in this tank. Its a 40 gallon breeder. I tried to get a good picture but this is all I could get. He was also lifting his leg up like this.

His tank parameters are:
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrites: 0ppm
Nitrates: 40 ppm
pH: 7.6~8

Any advice would help. This is my first axolotl and I want to keep him happy and safe 🥺

hello, my first thought was that it could be the axolotl showing that it is sexually mature as on some black and dark axolotls like melanonids and wilds, the toe tips go white white when the are sexually mature, how old is he? My second thought is that the nitrate levels might be too high. You mentioned that he was tubbed for the first two months that you had him, did you notice any suspicious behavior? If I were you I would check for any sharp objects in your aquarium. If he shows signs of pain and discomfort then I would tub him until his foot recovers. Good luck!😃

Hello! It’s possible that he is just growing or maybe it’s because your pH changes? (At least that’s how I interpret 7.6~8) I think if he isn’t showing any signs of stress that it isn’t much of a problem unless he is in pain. Sorry if this was not very helpful, I’m not the most experienced.
On an unrelated note, your tank is absolutely gorgeous! What hides and plants are you using?
