Metamorphosing too early

From what is happening to me at the moment I've learnt that if a larva metamorphoses too early when still too small it tends to dye shortly after metamorphosis.

Does anyone agree with my theory?

I agree with that for the most part. I've still managed to raise some tiny runts up to healthy sub-adults though. I'm sure it depends on the species too.
