Mosquito's

The guy at my local shop said to leave a bucket with some water in it outside, mosquitos will come and lay eggs, you the scoop the eggs out and feed them to your axies...

Does anyone else do this or know of this being done?

Also, by doing this will my axies eat all of them or will the eggs just float around and make my tank gross???

Thankyou

I don't know about their nutritional value, but I do know that I would hate to have be attracting mosquitos anywhere near me or my house.

I don't know how it is over in Australia, but in this part of the US, we are encouraged not to leave standing water around because mosquitos can and do transmit diseases (i.e. malaria, west nile virus, etc). The eggs themselves may not be harmful to your axies, but the mosquitos probably aren't something you'd want around you or your house. Just a thought.

HA for a while i was breeding the little blighters in one of the axies tanks! i used to see the little wigglers wiggling around so i used to sit there for about an hour sucking them up with the turkey baster then id send them flying to their death onto the lawn :D great fun haha, i have no idea about them eating them though, the larave are way to small to even be noticed by my axies, maybe babies will eat them though....

Ok thanks...

In australia there isnt really any diseases carried by mozzies (unless you are in the northernmost parts of australia)...

as everyone else noone wants mozzies fling round their house...
Im mozzie paranoid, if there is one in my room, i have to get up and wait for it and kill it, even if its for an hour haha...

I especially hate when they buzz round your ears....sooo annoying.

hehe, Thanks

Mosqiuto larvae are standard food for fish, you can get them frozen like blood worms. They should be all right for small axies (probably a good food for babies). But no, I wouldn't encourage their breeding near my house, but thats your own judgement call.

i am led to believe mossies found both in northern parts of Oz as well as in the more country areas or less built up suburbs surrounding the cities are generally the more harmful i.e. carrying ross rvier and stuff you dont want this anywhere near you believe me!!!

I was going to mention ross river fever... and the bites are SO annoying.
But if you find you've accidentally got wigglers (larvae) that you'll have to get rid of anyway, could you feed them to your axolotls? Or would they be too small for adults?

I think mosquito larvae would be too small to feed adult axolotls but they could be good for juvis.
