Mould

I recently bought a culture of fruitflies from a petshop. The original culture is fine, but the one I decanted some flies into has just got covered in mould. I put a layer of mashed banana at the bottom, a piece of cotton wool for pupating on and covered the container with fine gauzy material.
Many of the flies seem to have died, and there are no eggs/maggots as far as I can see. What went wrong? Despite being next to the failure, the original culture is still healthy with lots of adult flies...

Yes, sprinkle some yeast on top of the banana this is what the larvae will feed on, the yeast will also ferment the banana stopping it from going mouldy. You can buy the yeast in sachet's at your local supermarket.

Or you can use a commercial ff media, and add yeast to that.

Thanks. I'll try another bnannana one with yeast, and then start one of the orange-juice mixture ones if the first one fails or does very well.
Thanks

Is the point of adding yeast(besides being the food source) also to outcompete mold etc?

I've never had a mold problem in my cultures and that is strange since there is so much nutrition in the mix.

Here's a good recipe
8 cups potato flakes
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup brewers yeast

Sprinkle a few grains of active yeast on top of each culture
To 1/3 to 1/2 cup of this mixture add 1/2 cup of a 1 to 1 mix of white vinegar and water
add adult flies

The vinegar keeps down mold and fungus
You will have high and consistent yields

Lately I have been using this recipe and mixing it about 40/60 with carolina formula 424. When mixing with the commercial media I don't use vinegar. The brewers yeast seems to increase yield and smell.

Oatmeal 500 grams,
Yeast 50 grams,
a pot of applesauce,
and some warm water.

Leave it rising for one day, and you have a perfect fruitfly mixture!

No, I havent. Im not really sure why he wont eat. Hes in a 1 gallon tub and still a juvenile. When i offer food he swims away from it. Does he need some extra time? or is this something I should be worried about.

Hello everyone! I’m new in this world and i need some advices please! I have 2 axolotl babies and currently the water from the tank is from bottled water ( all parameters are good) but i want to change 50% of the water with city tap water. My question is how to change it? Do i need to get axis out, do the change, add the prime, wait (how much?) until its dechlorinated or i can add the tap water directly into the tank with axis in it, and add the prime conditioner? Thank you!!

    1. You dont need to take them out of the tank to change the water as long as you pour it in slow as to not rattle them around too much

    2. add the prime to your tap water, for most conditioners the consensus is 5 minutes of waiting time

Does anyone know someone who can ship axolotls to hawaii? I recently did a water change and my axolotl died and there are no axos for sale right now.

Hello I'm wondering if fridging axolotl is necessary when giving it a salt bath? My fridge is unpredictable it just changes from freezing temperature to melting by itself. And driving me crazy. So I would not be keen to put my axie in these because of the sudden temperature changes it may experience. Can I leave him in a clean dechlorinated water tub in some of the room? Would I then need to refrigerate the salt water ? Or would I just keep it in a same room temperature?! I have everything ready for him to get a salt bath but just wanted to check about this fridging before I do ( waited for approval to join the forum:)
