Mouth Tumour?

Hi, Chilli my nine year old axolotl stopped eating a few weeks ago. He is always looking for food but when I give him some he makes no attempt to eat it. A few days ago I noticed that his mouth was open all the time and yesterday I could clearly see that there was some sort of growth on the roof of his mouth. Other than that he appears perfectly healthy and isn't at all stressed. Any ideas?

Oh dear. I would call a vet ASAP to see if it can be removed safely. I would worry about cancer, but either way it will probably have to be removed before he can eat. I know they have amazing healing abilities, so maybe someone else has a miracle recovery story, but you may need to prepare for bad news.

I found a vet locally who knew a little about axolotl's so took him along this afternoon quite expecting not to bring him home. The brave young vet agreed to operate and was able to remove the lump. He is now back in his tank so we shall see what the next few days bring.

That's great they were able to remove it! I hope he will heal up and get back to eating soon. Please keep us posted on Chilli's recovery, I'm rooting for him!

Thanks for your good wishes. He has started eating again and although he needs building up all the signs are good. The vet went on holiday the following day so I haven't had a chance to speak to her since but she did say that she didn't think the lump was cancerous.
