Greetings and Salutations to all the amphibian loving humans , worldwide and in the far beyond..
I'm a newy to the whole caudata community and think it's a fantastic thought concept. I have raised axolotls at various stages for around 6-8yrs. Unfortunately much of my early experience was heavily reliant on very ill-informed petshop and aquarium owners and assistants. So to have discovered this site for me has become another porthole to a whole new world of wonderment. You never can quite learn or know an animal enough, it is a constant learning experience. I have just moved to Melbourne from Perth.Having houses in both states with axolotls in them, it's truly amazing how much happier they are in a colder state. Good on them for climatising so well, the rest of us however, are feeling the cold. Me and the rest of my animal kingdom that is. Other than the weather there is soo much more to love about Melbourne. You can take your dogs on the trains here. I know that doesn't sound like much, but you're not allowed that in Perth. I really appreciate the freedom animal lovers have in this state, which I think encourages more responsible ownership. A lot of animals are dumped or left alone to there own devices and survival skills in Perth, it's sad and disheartening to the human spirit.
Melbourne Animal Lovers Are The Best... well that I've come across , no offence to anyone out there.
would love to hear from any local melbournites to the Reservoir area, as it would be great to collaborate experience and knowledge with someone in person,I love seeing other peoples displays for inspiration. With my experience axolotls like to feel a diversity in floor textures, ie: river sand, large gravel,Natural wood chips that are not treated, they really like wood and plants. I always incorporate at least 3 different textured flooring materials as the base for my tank. I have never had a problem with have or keeping real plants alive as my 4 ft tank is situated where it feels the natural changes of light patterns in a day, this helps the axolotls for general well being as well as optimising their breeding success. They will naturally get a sense of feel for the changes in season due to the natural light changes in your tank. I have a light which is on for 10 minutes a day twice at 5 minute intervals for feeding, early afternoon then again early evening. These seem to be the times from my experience that they are always happy and hungry to feed. I assume though have nothing to back me up, that due to there poor eyesight they would be more likely to feed at the darker time of the day. My pair are very tenacious feeders, coming up to the surface often, do the croc grab, shake it in there mouth to kill it,( even there pellets) then retrieve back down to consume it's kill in peace and quiet. So any one from Melbourne post me a reply, I'm interested to hear your stories. I'm not discriminating though, anyone please feel to post me a message, I will reply to all and may pick your brain for info.. Peace Out and Love to all. Mmwah xxx Ms Axolotta Love
