I went to clean his tank water today and noticed that he'd torn his tail quite badly, I'm not sure what i should do? I know they can regenerate parts of their body after a while but is there anything i can do to help him? or reduce the risk of fungus or infection during the time being? there's also nothing in my tank that i can see that would have caused the tear (I've attached photos of the tank set up so you can see as well as how his tail looks so let me know what you think)

Any advice would be very much appreciated, and sorry if I'm over reacting. I'm just worried about him.. Also let me know if you need any more photos

I actually witnessed one of mine bite a chunk out of his own tail!!
Just watch for fuzzy white fungus and treat if it occurs. Should heal fine but not always in the exact same shape!

Wow, well I hope if that's what he did he doesn't do it again! Hmm he might possibly have the beginnings of some sort of fungus on it? Either that or it's just going white on the part that's dangling. (i managed to get a clear photo so let me know what you think) I've delt with white fuzzy fungus before (oh his gills once when i first got him) but it looked very different from the white currently on his tail flap.

It will go white as the tissue dies.

Just make sure your tanks water quality is perfect, along with temperature, then fungus shouldn't be a problem.

That's good news, i'll keep an eye on him then and do regular water tests every few days to make sure everything's stable

I had exactly the same problem with my axolotl a couple months ago. Be very, very careful with that flap. I would take anything out of the tank it could get caught on, because it will cause it to tear further. I opted to use a pair of fingernail scissors to clip my axolotl's tail flap off, especially because it appeared to have become red, mad, and infected. About 2 months later it's almost completely healed. Just watch it carefully, make sure your water quality is perfect, etc. All the other advice is definitely valid. Good luck healing your little guy!

Sorry for the late reply, Thanks for the advice! I've been keeping a close eye on the little guy and the flap is gone now as AxolotlChris mentioned the tissue on the flap went white until it reached the healthy part of the tail and then it fell off from what i can tell.
