So a few days ago my axolotl was very ill. I had discovered my tap water was the problem (moved into a new city), the tip of her tail was curled and her gills looked very thin. However, this is not what I wanted to ask about. It has been about 3-4 days since I started using bottled spring water instead (I tested it and the parameters were perfect) but her tail still has that kink in it. I was wondering how long it will be before she will recover or if there can be something else bothering her still. The tap water had high ammonia and ph levels and I used spring water to clean her tank and everything in it. I noticed she has been on edge recently like the sponge filter has been scaring her. She seems to be acting fine despite the kink in her tail (e.g. swimming around, eating, looking at me, overall seems to be acting in high spirits again). Her gills recovered and look fine after just a couple days. I have had her for about 6 months now and no problems besides this one. I was hoping for responses as I am very worried for her. Thank you all.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
