I bought my first Axolotl and noticed his gills weren't 'fluffy' like other ones I've seen on photos. I bought him from a reptile centre and there was another axolotl there that also had no fluffy gills. Why is this, could it mean he's ill? I'm worried it may be a bad thing?

I've attached a photo

He has little hairs but nothing like others I've seen

It looks like your buddy was kept in high oxygenated water. Doesn't look sick to me. Their gill filaments are bigger in low oxygen and smaller in high oxygen. Maybe there's another reason that someone will post, that's just from my experience.
Congratulations on your new friend!

Some of my guys have really big filaments on their gills even with two aerators and a spray bar. It could be genetic but i'm a little curious, what kind of substrate are you using for your axolotl?

Looks normal to me - gill appearance depends more on genetics and water quality than anything else. My male has gills that look like that.

But I would get rid of that red gravel - your axie could swallow it, become impacted and very unhappy.
